Riding a Motorcycle on a B Licence in Turkey: 2025 Guide

Riders on motor scooters, driven on a class B licence, moving along a city street

Tired of the frantic pace of city traffic? Do you dream of leaving the hunt for a parking space behind and travelling freely with the wind on your face? Perhaps you think the only thing stopping you is getting a motorcycle licence. Then we have great news! Your class B (car) licence actually opens the door to a world on two and three wheels.

In this up-to-date guide from Adalya Motor, we explain in full detail which motorcycles and electric vehicles you can legally ride in Turkey with a B licence, what the limits of these vehicles are and which rules you must follow.

The Golden Rule: Mopeds Up to 50 cc

Mopeds have long been the most practical transport solution for B licence holders, and they still are. If you hold a class B licence, you can ride two- or three-wheeled mopeds with the following features without any extra conditions:

  • Engine capacity: If the engine is petrol, it cannot exceed 50 cc (cubic centimetres).
  • Motor power: If the motor is electric, its maximum nominal power cannot exceed 4 kW (kilowatts).
  • Maximum speed: It cannot exceed 45 kilometres per hour.

These vehicles are ideal for short city trips, shopping or enjoyable rides along the coast. Their low fuel consumption and practical size make life easier.

Big News: Riding a 125 cc Motorcycle if You Meet the Conditions!

One of the most exciting developments in the motorcycle world is that B licence holders have been given the right, under certain conditions, to ride motorcycles of up to 125 cc. You can now move up to a higher-performance motorcycle without needing to get an A1 licence. However, you must meet some conditions to use this right:

Conditions for riding a 125 cc:

  • Having held a class B licence for at least 2 years.
  • Meeting the required health conditions.
  • Taking practical motorcycle training at a driving school authorised by the Ministry of National Education (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı).
  • Passing the practical exam held after the training, and having this recorded on your licence.

Once you meet these conditions, you can legally ride any L3e-A1 class motorcycle with an engine capacity of no more than 125 cc and a power output of no more than 11 kW (14.7 hp). This gives B licence holders more agile riding in the city and safer riding on the outskirts.

What About Three-Wheelers?

Three-wheeled motorcycles are a great alternative for those who want safety and stability together. With your B licence, you can ride any L5e class three-wheeled motorcycle with a power output of no more than 15 kW. These vehicles give the rider great confidence with the extra stability they offer, especially in corners and on wet surfaces.

Why Is a B Licence the Minimum, and Why Does Following the Rules Matter?

You might wonder, “Why do I need a licence for such a small motorised vehicle?” The answer is actually very simple: because you are part of the traffic.

  • Basic traffic knowledge: A class B licence shows that you know the traffic rules, the signs, right of way and, above all, the responsibility of driving a vehicle in traffic. This is an essential foundation for your own safety and that of other drivers and pedestrians.
  • Risk and responsibility: Even with low power, these vehicles can reach serious speeds. An unlicensed rider is a potential danger. In the event of an accident, all legal and moral responsibility lies with the rider.
  • Legal penalties: The penalty for driving without a licence is quite severe. As well as a fine, your vehicle can be taken off the road. Even worse, if you are involved in an accident, insurance companies will not cover any damage and all the financial liability falls on you.

Are Registration and Insurance Compulsory? Absolutely!

One of the most important things to remember is registration. Whatever the engine power and type, all the vehicles mentioned above must be registered. That means that when you buy these vehicles:

  1. You must have them registered in your name through a notary sale.
  2. You must get a number plate.
  3. You must take out compulsory traffic insurance (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası).

Riding without a plate or without insurance is illegal and carries serious penalties.

In short, your B licence opens the door to practical, economical and enjoyable transport. Whether you enjoy the city on a 50 cc moped, or widen your horizons on a 125 cc scooter after taking the necessary training, the choice is yours!

Remember, the right gear saves lives. Never set off without your helmet, jacket and gloves.
